KAMBE partners with NGRAIN Corp. to create Augmented Reality app for Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios

The KAMBE Project is excited to announce a new collaboration with Vancouver-based NGRAIN Corporation and the University of British Columbia’s MAGIC (Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre) Lab to produce an augmented-reality (AR) app for Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios.  NGRAIN is sharing its expertise and industry-leading AR software to serve as a platform for the project, while MAGIC is providing the computing facilities and technical/design personnel.  The  interactive AR app will provide a means for researchers and visitors to the site to use a GPS-enabled mobile device (e.g., tablet, mobile phone) to overlay virtual content on areas of the site viewed by the device’s camera, with the correct position and perspective.  This content would include such things as reconstructions of visible ruins, locations of buried urban features detected by geophysical survey, and information on archaeological finds from particular locations.  Eventually, this app will integrate other forms of archaeological data useful for researchers that will be available via the web, including stratigraphic layers and detailed qualitative and quantitative information on finds, including 3D models of significant artifacts or features.  KAMBE Co-director Kevin Fisher was awarded an Accelerator Grant sponsored by MAGIC and UBC’s new Digital Salon initiative to begin development of the app.  Watch for updates as the work develops…
